This is the first in a series of recordings aimed at demonstrating the beauty, range and versatility of Trinidad's national instrument, THE STEEL PAN.
The 21' century looms large and the presence of this ART FORM will be significant. The PANIST, pan player will become as familiar a household term as the PIANIST. I extend a challenge to PANISTS far and wide to vigorously attack on all fronts of the creative domain, in order to make this vision of the ART FORM A STERLING REALITY.
In this project I was ably supported on bass and guitar by a very gifted musician, my friend LIONEL CHARLES; my daughter ROXANNE, singer; and a fantastic drummer NASYR AL KHABYYR plus all others appearing on the list of credits.
This album is dedicated to my wife Violet and my daughter Abiola. Look out for MERCHANTS OF SOUND-book to be published shortly.

Special thanks to E.0 Hill for the original concept seen on VIBRATIONS (Special Edition) and illustrations for MERCHANTS OF SOUND, my upcoming book; Blu Auguste and G. Langlois for French translations, Anouk Fermin for cover design and CD format. All liner notes written by B. Boldon. Graphic art by Paul Murton
ABOUT BERTRAM BOLDON Bertram was better known in Trinidad for his involvement and success in athletics - TRACK AND FIELD and CRICKET. His musical career blossomed in Montreal and began shortly after his arrival here in 1955. He soon began work here on steel pans under the late Louis Bleasdell, who together with Bert, V. Millington and D. Franklyn, formed the first official steelband in the city and indeed arguably in Canada....PAN JAMMERS (1956).
One year later Bert with three other students formed THE TROPITONES. He eventually was responsible for the repatriation of one of Trinidad's best pianists Rupert Nathaniel (SYMPHONETTES), uncle of the great Len Boogsy Sharpe, to form THE MELOTONES which become the main steelband in this city for over twenty years appearing just about everywhere.
Later he moved on to drums and other percussion instruments which further led to his deep involvement with the piano...both classical and jazz. He has appeared at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreal Casino, The Pittsburgh Jazz festival, Hotel Amadil in Agidir, Morocco; and a Rotary Club Concert once in San Jose, California. He is the composer of CHANTEZ MONTREAL CHANTEZ, a composition presented to the Mayor of Montreal, Jean Dore, on the celebration of Montreal's 350th anniversary. Bert has also performed with the group SHOWBOAT in Hollywood and most recently has done the music for THE TRIBUTE TO OLIVER JONES IN OCTOBER 2003 in Montreal. His performance at the NCC Concert in the fall of 2003 at the OSCAR PETERSON HALL was quite striking. Highlights of the 2005 season included A TRIBUTE TO HELENE WAVROCH, hosted at the Omni Hotel, by the Coloured Women's Club of Montreal. The year ended on a high note with Bert appearing on steel pans with the National Arts Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of dynamic conductor, Stephane Laforest. The occasion was THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S NATIONAL ARTS AWARDS, held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
Highlights so far this year (2006) include the opening act of the month-long MONTREAL MUSIC FESTIVAL (June 9/2006) followed by an opening act for GREGORY CHARLES (CELAFETE) on July the first commemorating CANADA DAY at Montreal's old port (attendance 110,000).
Bert believes that the steel drum (a misnomer) is capable of dealing with any type of musical challenge whether this be on the orchestral level or on the level of the virtuoso. He has developed a lecture series on the steel drum; its origins, development, techniques, evolution and its emergence as a cultural art form in Trinidad with the consequent effect on the social fabric of that country. Its effect on the world stage is being played out and would eventually turn out to be conspicuously significant.
Bert is a graduate of McGill University, University of Montreal, St. Joseph Teacher's College and has studied arranging and composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has taught in the public school system in Montreal for just under 35 years and has had abbreviated stints teaching at McGill University and at Berklee College.
