CHATTING WITH CHATTA
RX: How did you come by your style of deejaying?
CHATTA: I use to watch my elder brother Mark freestyle in the garage with his friends. Mark also has an up-tempo style. So being the shy person that I am, I would run upstairs, look in front of the mirror, close the door in the bathroom so nobody hears me, and then mimic him. Then return to his presence as if nothing happened and continue to watch him in silence.

RX: Who are some of your influences and why?
CHATTA: Beenie Man, because he is ‘real’ off stage and feeds me with words of wisdom and valuable conversations. His vibe, presence and style move me in a way that can be heard in some parts of my style. Michael Jackson, the best performer of all time got me into ‘popping’ from a young age, as it was also included in some of my dancehall performances during the early stages. Capleton’s fire and the way he plays with his ranges and energizes his audience move me because I love action and hype presence and mannerisms when it comes to expressing certain subjects. Lady Saw rules the stage and does not allow the stage rule her. Her powerful voice on the mic has been dominant for so long, therefore her hard work, courage and dedication are attractive to a female artist such as me.
RX: Do you have any new releases? If so, which producer and studio did you work with?
CHATTA: “Mango Love” is the newest release. It was pre-produced at Slamm Studio and then Bobby Digital’s Studio in Kingston Jamaica. One of my producers thought what a wonderful thing it would be for me to write a love song. So, I wrote one with a twist, keeping in mind the belief that it is a gift for a Woman to join with a Man or Man to join with a Woman who is knowledgeable about curing any ailment at hand with an herb or fruit from Mother Nature.
RX: Any future collaboration in mind? And if so, with which producers and/or artists?
CHATTA: Thus far, I have collaborated with former Tuff Gong recording Artist Ever G from out of the United States. Collaboration with Turbulence has recently been completed and you could look for the release of that song in October of 2009. Upcoming collaborations include Torontoís Reggae Queen Donna Makeda, the man with a voice of gold - Luciano, the Man who brought us Barrak Obama - Coco Tea and as time goes on with the need for a collaboration of style and knowledge with an Artist, so be it, as I am open minded and eager for many opportunities at hand.
RX: What does the public have to expect from Chatta moving forward?
CHATTA: The public will always expect songs from Chatta that will inform the public of her learnings being the Doctor of Natural Medicine that she is. You can always expect a song that is different and unique as Chatta is not afraid to touch a topic that may be deemed as unusual. You can expect collaborations, soul vibes, dancehall for sure, hip hop and much more. Stay in touch with www.chatta.ca in order to be aware of Chatta’s projects.
RX: How do you view reggae music in Canada (sales and otherwise)? Do you see it getting anywhere whereby reggae artists can start getting signed to major labels and what do you think needs to be done by the reggae artists in Canada to reach this goal?
CHATTA: Although Canada is not a major avenue for reggae music, Reggae Music in Canada has put more artist music on the airwaves due to the development of more and more reggae based radio programmes and the internet. The rate of growth for reggae in Canada is extremely slow in developing but at least it is happening. For example, the introduction of new reggae festivals in and around the provinces. In order for an artist to be signed to a major label (I believe Canada has mad talent for that to take place), they might have to leave Canada first to be exposed to the Japan, England, Europe, United States, and of course Jamaican market first, if the label is not already mingled in Canada. What needs to be done by Reggae Artists in Canada? I mean, I ain’t no expert as I am learning this game myself, but they must leave to where the roots of the music has come from, Jamaica. Blessed love.
